Time for SEO Optimization Part 2 - Page Content
No one - including an SEO expert - knows the magic formula - there isn't one. But it's a good idea to sprinkle your search terms throughout the content. Search engines, such as Google, prefer to see a lot of content on a page.
What's a lot? Like other SEO expert firms, we have had success with pages with as few as 50 words. Our industry suggests minimums of 250 words or even 500 words. The ranking depends on the search term, placement within the page, title and META structure, link building and other factors.
On your pages, strive for many of the following SEO tips. Over time, mix them up a bit and see what combination works well for you.
1. SEO expert companies will tell you that you need a header tag like <h1> or <h2>. It definitely helps. Place it at the top of each page as your content begins.
2. Surround your header tag with other search terms - use a dash or an ellipse, an intentional sentence fragment. You can spruce up the appearance with different font colors and sizes or a horizontal rule.
3. Stagger your search terms throughout the page. When possible, maybe favor the first search term in your title tag at least one more time than the other targeted keywords for the page as part of your SEO optimization strategy.
4. Watch out for competing words. It's virtually impossible to avoid them, but try to say something different ways. According to any SEO expert, you don't want any word on the page to dominate others. For example, we toned down the overuse of the word "application" on a client's web site. We found ways to avoid or to restate it.
5. If possible, link your search terms in the copy (maybe 4-5 different times total among your target keywords). Search engines like that. And if you link them, only link the phrase - not other words that aren't part of the strategy. SEO expert consultants feel it's best to link them to another page that also contains some of the same phrases to some degree.
ALT Tags
A word about "alt" tags, which each SEO expert on our staff may favor from time to time. These go with images. You don't want to ignore them, necessarily, but they're way down the list in terms of how a search engine ranks a page. Don't repeat keywords if you use "alt" tags. Save them for an individual search term or a few search terms. Here is an example: alt="financial planners, financial consultants, Ohio CPA firms."
